Bo and his partner Hisako Ichiki formed Bunch Design in 2010. From the start they have focused on residential architecture working on tricky sites for non-millionaires, trying to bring space and delight to normal folks. They have worked on countless home remodels and new builds; and since the state law changed in 2017 they have constructed over 30 ground up ADU’s. Over 90% of their projects designed are built, a rare statistic. They do this through good due diligence, thoughtful design, and client care.
Bunch Design believes that Form Follows Space, meaning that we focus on volume and the interior spaces first. We build up a narrative of sequences: space and use, storyboarding, Hollywood style, as we go. You spend 90% of your time inside your house. Make it count. We have an interest in making small spaces feel large. You perceive space, but you can mess with perception. We seek lightness in our approach with simple materials.
Bo graduated in 1997 with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Brown University in Rhode Island and in 2001 with a Masters of Architecture from SCI-Arc (Southern California Institute of Architecture) where he won a National AIA Merit Award. He is a licensed architect in the state of California and has worked for Jerde, Gensler and Roto Architects before founding Bunch Design.
